Single Woman Double Clutches:
A School Bus Driver's Life...

Narrative and introspective poetry, commentary, original art, and landscape photography by letterpress printer and book artist Kate Hitt, who drove thousands of kindergarten through 12th grade kids from many cultures to and from dozens of schools for 14 years in her public school bus.

This colorful book portrays the skill, hard work and dedication of a seasoned California school bus driver, and the active hearts and minds of the student riders. The upper middle class white and privileged kids whose parents commuted to their tech jobs rode alongside children of color and immigrant farmworkers’ kids on the school bus every day. Under the watchful eye of the driver, the students learned to socialize peacefully, accept diversity, practice tolerance, patience and ethical behavior, and foster respect for each other, for their elders, and the environment.

Single Woman Double Clutches also creates a truthful picture of immigrant refugees who have crossed over the southern border to work in the fields and orchards of Central California, and make a new life in the US despite the racism, language barriers, poverty and many other challenges. The most egregious betrayals are by the corporations and governments that continue to use toxic pesticides—even around the schools—and the brutal, rogue political system that criminalizes adult and child immigrants alike, illegally imprisoning and deporting them, barring them from ever becoming U.S. citizens.

There are also poems and images of consequence that narrate the true stories about fires, floods, earthquakes and other natural disasters, and how the driver effectively dealt with danger and protected her wards.

Driving a bus in all weathers is crazy dangerous. Protecting tiny girls while managing back talking teenage boys is a miracle. Double clutching a rumbling yellow bus, an act of skill. The story, told in open and observant poems, reveals how Kate's daily journey with a busload of kids also uncovers the strength of the child at work in her own psyche. -Felicia Rice, Moving Parts Press
